We believe what you drink should not only taste good, it should be good for the land, good for the people who grow the ingredients and as good for you as a fizzy drink can be.

Back in 2010 we made our first few bottles of Karma Cola using a bag of cola nuts sent to us by our friends in Boma, a small village in the Gola Rainforest in Sierra Leone. We’d learned that the world drinks more than a million colas a minute but none of the money went back to the people who originally discovered the stuff. So we made a drink to fix that.


We set up the Karma Cola Foundation to make sure the people who grow our cola get something back from the people who drink it.

The people we work with in Sierra Leone want the same things as us. They want to send their kids to school and they want to be self-sufficient. Sometimes this can be as simple as having food stored safely away for the rainy season that will inevitably come. The Karma Cola Foundation gives cola farmers and their families this independence through trade and supporting projects to develop infrastructure and education.


The Karma Cola Foundation was founded on the guiding principle that the eight communities we support know what’s best for them.

When we first started trading cola with villages in the Tiwai region of Sierra Leone we realised they needed more than the money we pay for cola. After a ten-year civil war they needed to rehabilitate their rainforest farms, rebuild their villages, and earn an income.

We set up the Karma Cola Foundation to make sure that if we grow, they grow too. This isn't aid, it's a straightforward trade. We believe the best form of support and economic independence is an equitable commercial relationship and mutual respect.

Karma is the ethos behind the business – the more Karma Cola we sell the more good we can do.

The Karma Cola Foundation doesn’t tell the people in the Tiwai Community what to do. We want them to be independent. They decide on the most important projects to fund, along with our partners on the ground, German charity Welthungerhilfe and the African Agro Forestry Farmers Association. The Foundation is headed by Albert Tucker, a Fairtrade advocate and former director of Twin Trading and Divine Chocolate, both pioneering Fairtrade companies.


To date, representatives of the community have decided to build the Makenneh Bridge, joining old and new Boma and ensuring the safe transportation of people and supplies.

They’ve also provide scholarships for more than 60 young children to school, supported five primary and secondary school teachers in a community run school teaching 270 children; built two rice-processing centres to secure food supply; supported an educational HIV/AIDS theatre group; erected meeting-houses (barri) and a guest house to rent out to visitors, funded medical supplies during the Ebola epidemic, rehabilitated rainforest farms, developed a seed bank for future seasons, helped a group of entrepreneurs start up their own small businesses, set up an adult literacy programme and trained community organisers and leaders.


Karma Cola may be just a fizzy drink but we’re serious about looking after the people who grow our ingredients. That’s why we wear the world’s most recognised ethical label — Fairtrade

The Fairtrade system was put in place to protect farmers who were historically exploited by big businesses trading commodities from developing nations. It enables growers to be in control of their own business on their own farms and their own terms.

Over 1.2 million small farmers and workers across 66 countries benefit from Fairtrade. Fairtrade International have also established environmental rules for farmers, including the banning of 120 chemical sprays. The Fairtrade movement has introduced us to small farmers around the world and helped us source the ingredients that make our drinks good for the growers and good for the land they’re grown.

We’ve been named one of The World’s Most Ethical Companies by The Ethisphere Institute for two years in a row and we’ve been awarded ‘The World’s Fairest Trader by The Fairtrade Foundation.

We get Fairtrade ginger for Gingerella and vanilla for Karma Cola from the Sri Lankan Rainforest Garden Growers Association. They reinvest their Fairtrade premium to develop their 100% organic, chemical-free, rainforest farms. Fairtrade cola didn’t exist in Sierra Leone or anywhere in the world which is why we had to set up our own system and created the Karma Cola Foundation.


We’ve searched far and wide for the most delicious organic ingredients to make our drinks. We choose organic produce because we believe in treating the planet like our own backyard and choosing ingredients grown with care

Organic farming puts less stress on the land to get more out of it. It’s defined by the absence of chemical fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides or insecticides. This is good news for the land and the people living in and around these farms. It’s also good for flavour as the produce tastes just as nature intended.

In The Silent Spring, the book that launched the modern organic movement, Rachel Carson reasons that the intensified, industrialised agriculture of the last half of the 20th century has been silencing the very things that help plants thrive; the birds and the bees.

Sadly, the biodiversity of rainforests, like the Gola Rainforest where our cola is grown, are threatened by an insatiable appetite for cheaper food grown on a massive scale. Jungles are cleared to make way for cattle farms, palm oil plantations and mono-cultures of high energy-yielding biomass like sugar beet to convert to biofuel.

We’re doing our part to show that it’s possible to grow great tasting organic and sustainable crops in regions like the edge of the Gola Rainforest where our cola comes from, in Matale, Sri Lanka where we get our ginger and vanilla and in Maharastra, India where farmers of the Suminter Organic Farmers Consortium grow the organic and Fairtrade sugar we use in our drinks.
